Doing forty things by forty

I have a little list...

No.9

Almost forgot.

A day course has been booked towards no.9.  I have some thought that this one should be considered ‘done’ only if I can do a ‘real gig’… It would be nice if it were paid, but I’d live without that.

Unless the course shows that I am completely useless. In which case I’ll do an open mic and be done with it.

The continuation to much of this is whether or not a Theremin could be made to be amusing… (excepting the inimitable Bill Bailey, *is* there anyone doing so? Are there any other ‘odd’ instruments out there?  Yes I know, running before I can walk - except I can already sing etc etc etc).

No. 37 - learn a new-to-me instrument

Again… And it is set. Or as set as it can be :-)

Regardless of whether or not I do anything else with it, No. 37 is to be

The Theremin.

Why?

I’ve wanted to learn to play this since I was 14. Between then and my early 20’s I spent a lot of time learning and playing lots of other instruments - most of whom I no longer own let alone claim to play even badly - and got distracted away from the esoterics and electronics . When I had time in my 20’s and since, I didn’t have the cash… and theremins were extremely expensive. I let myself drift away from music in general and a hideous and burgeoning lack of self confidence made sure that I didn’t return.

One of the wonderful side effects of the last couple of years has been the return of my self confidence. With this I’ve decided never to run away from or turn down opportunities as they present themselves; and as I am capable of doing more, the opportunities keep coming :-) I suspect that I am somehow making them, rather than there being a divine ‘plan’ or ‘lady luck’ or any of that.

But I digress… I could learn all sorts of things, I could cheat and relearn something I haven’t owned or touched for 20 years.  But I still have a decent set of ears, and I am musically capable even though very very *very* rusty. Ears seem to be the most important thing with regard to the theramin.

So the Theramin it is.  Initially I’m going to grit my teeth and buy one.  Not sure what with, but I think that I can probably sort it somehow.  I’ll blog my progress somewhere - with at least links to here if not here. There will be pictures.  If I get ‘good’ or ‘adequate’ there will be a public performance at some point, or a recording, or ??? who knows.

The adventure of No. 37 begins :-)

Lots of other numbers… but mainly no.37

Long discussion this afternoon (well, long in twitter terms anyway :-)  )

Looks like I may have convinced myself to choose Theremin for no. 37…

I found instructions to make one out of LEGO

LEGO!

Anyway - have a look at this.

Having said that. It would probably be sensible to buy or borrow a theremin to start with. Wonder how little I can get away with spending…

No 9

OK so a backside has been got off of (although I remained sitting throughout) and a day course booked - it creeps closer…

Looking at The List…

Thinking I may stretch the timeframe a little. Else risk not doing it all…

OK so I know that some things are a long shot (28, 19 -unless self- 7) but other things are more than doable given enough time and, frankly, cash!

I would really appreciate some input. Tweet me @HelenArmfield :-)

No.36 Snow…

No. 25 #FF

Today’s #4040by062012 #FF is for @scicurious who tells of many interesting things at scientopia.org/blogs/scicurio… read and enjoy (and learn!) :-)
